The two technologies move differently. The more useful question is how that difference fits the way you actually want to brush every day.

What a sonic toothbrush does

Sonic toothbrushes generally use an elongated head and rapid side-to-side movement. The shape feels familiar to anyone coming from a conventional toothbrush, while the motor supplies the motion. You guide the head slowly along the teeth and gumline rather than creating the brushing stroke yourself.

The exact movement pattern, frequency, amplitude, bristle layout, and head geometry vary by product, so "sonic" describes a category of motion rather than a single level of cleaning performance.

What an oscillating-rotating toothbrush does

Oscillating-rotating brushes usually use a smaller round head that turns a short distance in one direction and then the other. Many current models add pulsations or micro-vibrations. The smaller head often encourages a tooth-by-tooth technique rather than the broader sweeping feel of an elongated sonic head.

Neither approach is inherently difficult to use. They simply feel different, and that difference can matter more than specification sheets suggest.

Does one clean better?

The research is more nuanced than most comparison charts make it sound. A 2021 systematic review in the Journal of the American Dental Association found moderate-certainty evidence suggesting little to no difference between oscillating-rotating and side-to-side powered brushes for plaque and gingival-index reduction at four weeks.

Other systematic reviews have found small but statistically significant advantages for oscillating-rotating brushes on some plaque and gingival outcomes. A 2023 review comparing oscillating-rotating with high-frequency sonic brushes found a small longer-term advantage for the oscillating-rotating category, and a 2026 network meta-analysis ranked oscillating-rotating brushes first for plaque reduction with sonic brushes second.

That does not mean every round-head brush is better than every sonic brush. Studies use different devices, populations, durations, outcomes, and sponsorship structures. The fair conclusion is that both technologies can be effective, while some evidence gives oscillating-rotating systems a modest edge on certain measured outcomes.

Why Evren does not treat movement count as a scoreboard

Lyric is a sonic toothbrush, but we do not think "more movements per minute" is a useful shorthand for "better toothbrush." Lyric operates at 33,000 movements per minute; that is a specification, not the philosophy of the product.

When we developed Lyric, cleaning performance was the first priority. But performance also had to include the experience of using the brush: a slim handle, quieter operation, a familiar head shape, a gentler feel, simple controls, and an object that looks appropriate in a well-designed bathroom. None of those were afterthoughts.

We are also comfortable acknowledging the tradeoff. If your only objective is maximizing every measurable plaque outcome in the studies that favor oscillating-rotating technology, a strong oscillating-rotating brush may be the right choice. Evren is not built around pretending that another technology has no strengths.

The part that gets lost in technology comparisons

The brush still has to be used for two minutes, twice a day. It needs to reach comfortably around your mouth. The bristles need to make good contact without encouraging aggressive pressure. The head needs to be replaced on time. And the experience needs to be pleasant enough that you actually follow the routine.

This is why we think of a toothbrush as a system rather than a motor category. Motion matters. So do head design, bristle design, ergonomics, sound, timer behavior, battery life, and the ownership model around replacement heads.

Which should you choose?

Choose the brush whose motion, head shape, and overall experience make it easy for you to brush thoroughly and consistently. If you like a compact round head and tooth-by-tooth technique, oscillating-rotating may suit you. If you prefer an elongated head and a more familiar brushing feel, sonic may feel more natural.

If you have specific gum, orthodontic, dexterity, or dental concerns, ask your dentist which approach makes the most sense for you.

The short version

Sonic and oscillating-rotating toothbrushes use different mechanical approaches, and research does not reduce the choice to a simple winner. Some evidence favors oscillating-rotating designs on certain clinical measures; both categories can clean effectively. The better everyday brush is the one that gives you strong cleaning performance and a routine you will actually keep.
